But, the story begins to decline after we get to the Emerald City. Fabulous choreography and aesthetics still, but the character motives and pacing just crash in on themselves out of nowhere. At one point we have Elphaba hurriedly turning against the world for animal rights, and at another we listen to a 5 minute song while the narrative stops. It's like watching two movies before and after boarding the emerald train, and the production is clearly more comfortable with handling interpersonal dynamic over big-world conflict. It's also possible that the Part I & II agenda messes up with the screenplay toward the end, which is pure corporate stupidity.
