Definitely lives up to its box office success. I haven't watched the play so I can't tell how much of it is direct transcription, but the screenplay is robust and just captivating. Everything throughout Shiz's arc is perfect, whether the costume or production design, the progression of incidents, the balance of music and narrative, the realistic implications, and most importantly, the performances. Ariana and Cynthia are perfect castings for their roles, both effortlessly commanding the emotions of their every scene whether self-absorbed sentimentality or fragile resilience. When it comes to portraying malice for the appearance, pride and prejudice, and the birth of mutual understanding, it just doesn't get any better than the party sequence in the film. Props to the director Jon Chu for executing these heavy interpersonal issues at times with ridiculously relatable comedy and at others with much needed tears.
