So in other words, a story is a choice, a choice of a particular moment in life when "something happens within it that changes the character forever. So we tell a certain story, starting at one time and ending at another, in order to frame that moment of change". But we probably shouldn't take the word "change" to literally. In In The Cart, there hasn't been much of a change per se, but it provides profound reasons for why "this is the day on which it appeared that things might have changed forever, but then they didn’t, because they never could have, of course".
